Key Responsibilities:
Essential Duties

  • Thoroughly reviews and verifies surgical case carts prior to procedures.
  • Maintains an organized surgical environment, efficiently passing instruments and supplies to the surgeon.


  • Anticipates and prioritizes the needs throughout the surgical process.
  • Participates in counts of sponges, needles, and instruments as per procedural requirements.
  • Ensures proper handling and preservation of surgical specimens for pathology analysis.


  • Assists in the ordering and inventory of specialty supplies in accordance with departmental protocols.
  • Responsible for the transportation and delivery of items, equipment, and medications throughout the facility.


  • May have limited access to medication storage areas.
  • Adheres to attendance policies consistent with organizational standards.


  • Complies with all relevant policies and procedures.


Additional Duties:

  • Demonstrates proficiency in operating specialized instruments and equipment as required.
  • Collaborates with vendors to provide training on new technologies and procedures.
  • Educates staff on cleaning and sterilization processes for instruments and accessories.


  • Coordinates with Materials Management to maintain adequate inventory levels of sterile and non-sterile supplies.
  • Assists in evaluating team members' clinical performance and conducting assessments.


  • Involved in the recruitment and evaluation of potential team members.
  • Promotes exceptional customer service within the department.
  • Monitors compliance with certifications and educational requirements for team members.


  • Plans and evaluates adherence to organizational policies and regulations.
  • Manages various human resources functions, including coaching and performance evaluations.


  • Actively engages in departmental performance improvement initiatives.
  • Maintains awareness of legal issues and patient rights in compliance with regulatory standards.


  • Participates in educational programming to enhance professional development.

Qualifications:
Education/Training

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Successful completion of:

  • A Surgical Technology training program; or
  • U.S. Military Medical Corps Training; or
  • An equivalent on-the-job training program.

Licensure/Certification:

National certification as a Surgical Technologist is required, to be obtained within six months of hire from one of the following:

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) – renewed every four years; or
  • Tech in Surgery - Certified by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) – renewed annually.

  • Current BLS/HealthCare Provider certification is mandatory.

Experience:

A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a surgical technologist is required.
