Job Overview

This position is part of the Maintenance Division within the U.S. Department of the Interior. The role is available as a permanent full-time or permanent Career-Seasonal appointment. Career-Seasonal roles offer the same benefits as permanent positions but do not guarantee year-round employment. Employees typically work from December to mid-November and are in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.

Position Responsibilities

As a Utility Systems Repairer-Operator (USRO), you will be responsible for managing water and wastewater systems, including treatment, distribution, and collection. Your duties will include:

  • Assisting in the activation, operation, maintenance, and deactivation of various utility facilities.
  • Monitoring and troubleshooting equipment such as meters, pressure switches, and pumps.
  • Collecting and processing water samples in compliance with quality assurance and control standards.
  • Participating in sewage pumping operations and conducting both scheduled and emergency repairs.

Work Environment

This position is located in a remote area with varying elevations and temperature ranges. Employees may experience extreme weather conditions and will have access to limited community facilities. Housing options are available for this role.

Employment Conditions

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation is mandatory.
  • Compliance with the Selective Service Registration Act is required for male applicants.
  • Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program is necessary.
  • A valid driver's license is required, and you may need to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record.
  • Uniform compliance with National Park Service standards is expected, and a uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Availability for on-call duties, evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, candidates must demonstrate:

  • Ability to perform the duties of a Utility System Repairer Operator with minimal supervision.
  • Capability to interpret technical instructions and specifications.
  • Proficiency in using and maintaining tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair.
  • Technical practices and the ability to use measuring instruments effectively.
