Position Overview

SMBC Capital Markets, Inc. is seeking a Credit Analyst to specialize in Hedge Funds while also covering other non-bank financial institutions. This Vice President-level role reports directly to the Head of Credit Services within the Chief Operating Office of SMBC Global Markets. The primary responsibility is to conduct credit underwriting to support our Global Markets investor operations. This position is situated on the trading floor, providing a dynamic and fast-paced work environment that involves direct interaction with front office personnel, second line credit officers, and clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive credit analyses on hedge funds, asset managers, insurance firms, and banks, focusing on investment strategies, asset quality, leverage, liquidity, historical performance, portfolio exposures, and risk management frameworks.
  • Evaluate derivatives and securities financing transactions across the client base, collaborating closely with derivatives marketers, relationship managers, risk management, credit department, and legal teams to mitigate risks.
  • Assist in the negotiation of master agreements, identify policy exceptions, and provide ongoing monitoring for potential termination events.
  • Approve initial margin requirements and ensure continuous credit monitoring of the assigned portfolio, maintaining accurate risk ratings and escalating any credit quality deterioration to management.
  • Foster open relationships with clients through due diligence meetings and regular performance updates.
  • Mentor and manage junior staff members, providing training and guidance.
  • Engage in special projects as needed.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in finance or business is required.
  • 5-7 years of relevant credit experience, particularly with hedge funds, insurance companies, asset managers, and financial institutions.
  • Strong understanding of derivatives and securities financing product risks.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, complemented by strong analytical abilities and attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and perform effectively under pressure.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
