This role is crucial in supporting the surgical team by serving as the primary scrub technician responsible for managing instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical operations. The incumbent must maintain a vigilant sterile field and continuously learn new techniques to enhance support in specialized surgical services. Responsibilities also include assisting with the upkeep of equipment and supplies, as well as managing inventory. The technician will be proficient in acting as the scrub technician for two specialties or three subspecialties. Depending on the location, mandatory on-call duties, as well as holiday and weekend shifts, may be required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Verify the availability and functionality of surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment prior to procedures.
  • Prepare sterile supplies and set up the surgical table for each operation.
  • Ensure a sterile environment during surgical procedures, assisting the surgical team in maintaining proper attire and draping the patient appropriately.
  • Uphold aseptic techniques and promptly inform the surgical team of any breaches in the sterile field.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies as required.
  • Collaborate with the circulating nurse to adhere to perioperative counting policies for sharps, instruments, and sponges.
  • Prepare instruments for sterilization through cleaning and wrapping.
  • Support the maintenance of specialty surgical services.
  • Prepare sterile dressings for patient incisions.
  • Guide and orient medical/nursing students and technologists within the unit.
  • Contribute to the development of unit goals, quality improvement initiatives, and cost management strategies.
  • Facilitate the borrowing and lending of equipment as directed.
  • Deliver an annual educational in-service to surgical technologist staff on topics such as safety, quality, or equipment orientation.
  • Engage in onboarding, mentoring, and training new surgical technologists.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficient in performing essential job functions as outlined.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to provide appropriate care for the patient population served.
  • Authority to identify and address breaches in the sterile field with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to maintain a fast-paced work environment while catering to multiple surgeons' preferences.
  • Expertise in the care and management of surgical instruments and supplies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of patient care principles across various age groups.
  • Ability to assess patient status and provide care in accordance with departmental policies.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited surgical technologist program or formal military training as a surgical technologist.
  • At least two years of full-time experience as a surgical technologist.
  • Demonstrated competency in performing essential functions for at least two specialties or three subspecialties within the first six months of employment.

Licenses Required

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system, to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through NBSTSA or as a Certified Technologist in Surgery (TS-C) through NCCT.

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without accommodation.

  • This position may involve intermediate working conditions in a healthcare environment, requiring the ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds. The incumbent may encounter exposure to potentially hazardous materials and must wear protective attire at all times. Prolonged standing or walking is also required.
