Position Overview: The Infection Control Nurse Specialist is a licensed professional nurse who operates under the guidance of the Infection Prevention Manager and collaborates closely with the Executive Director of Infection Prevention. This role is pivotal in overseeing hospital surveillance to identify healthcare-associated infections and ensuring compliance with public reporting mandates. The specialist will contribute to the development of policies and procedures within the Wellstar framework and provide education to both patients and healthcare team members. Regular audits and facility rounds will be conducted to assess adherence to Infection Prevention protocols, including those related to construction, cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization practices.
Key Responsibilities:
1. **Surveillance**
- Execute surveillance for healthcare-associated infections and significant epidemiological organisms as outlined in the Infection Prevention Plan.
- Apply current NHSN definitions consistently and accurately.
- Collect, analyze, and aggregate data effectively.
- Ensure precise input of NHSN data and run validation reports proficiently.
- Participate in both internal and external data validation processes.
- Investigate potential infection clusters and outbreaks.
- Engage in environment of care rounds and manage IP-related corrective measures.
2. **Reporting and Communication**
- Uphold confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
- Maintain meticulous surveillance records and enter data into designated repositories.
- Report infectious diseases to local and state health authorities as mandated.
- Submit data to internal and external stakeholders by established deadlines.
- Analyze information to enhance knowledge for effective communication.
3. **Education**
- Design and implement educational programs for staff.
- Provide patient and family education on infection prevention as needed.
- Conduct orientation sessions for new hospital team members regarding Infection Prevention practices.
4. **Leadership**
- Collaborate with management to review and enforce system policies and procedures.
- Utilize available resources to address organizational inquiries and needs.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Work with Employee Health to manage healthcare worker exposure and illness prevention.
- Assist in the annual risk assessment and evaluation of surveillance plans.
- Contribute to the assessment of new products and technologies.
Qualifications:
- **Education:** Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) or RN with a relevant bachelor’s degree in a healthcare-related field.
- **Licensure and Certification:** Valid RN license (Single State or Multi-state Compact) and certification in Infection Control within two years of hire.
- **Experience:** Minimum of two years in a clinical nursing role and at least one year in infection prevention preferred.
- **Skills:** Strong verbal and written communication abilities, excellent teamwork and relationship-building skills, and a solid understanding of epidemiology principles, data collection, and Infection Prevention guidelines are essential.
