Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS) is a leading private technology firm specializing in the design, development, and operation of advanced space camera systems for both governmental and commercial aerospace clients. Our expertise extends to spacecraft instrument operations and space science research.
The Mars Imaging Operations Engineer will work under the supervision of the Orbital Group Manager/Sr. Staff Scientist.
The Orbital Group is responsible for the management of two critical imaging systems aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO):
the Context Camera (CTX), utilized for geological terrain mapping at a resolution of 6 m/pixel, and the Mars Color Imager (MARCI), designed for daily global weather observation at 1 km/pixel.
Both imaging systems were developed and constructed at MSSS.Key Responsibilities
- Command, retrieve, process, log, and archive Martian imagery.
- Monitor the operational health and safety of flight instruments on the MRO by analyzing engineering data on a daily basis.
- Review instrument Episodic Event Reports (EVRs) to evaluate their implications and check File Exchange Interface (FEI) logs for science and engineering data transport.
- Investigate any anomalous data values and retrieve navigational information (SPICE system kernel files).
- Create and prepare command sequences for acquiring images from MARCI and CTX for validation with peers.
- Adhere to detailed procedures and maintain thorough documentation of work.
- Consistently execute complex, repetitive, and detailed tasks with precision and efficiency.
- Meet deadlines while managing multiple tasks under pressure, ensuring a high degree of accuracy.
- Proactively identify, document, and propose solutions to potential issues to senior team members or management.
- Update or create new procedural documentation and suggest operational improvements through discussions with the team.
- Communicate technical information clearly and effectively in both written and verbal formats.
- Regularly review newly acquired images from MARCI and CTX for any signs of camera performance issues.
- Assist with Planetary Data System (PDS) archiving deliverables.
- Contribute to data analysis as directed by senior team members, produce maps of the study area, and engage in specific research initiatives.
- Work collaboratively with other members of the Orbital Group while maintaining self-sufficiency.
- Assist MSSS scientific personnel in research as needed.
- Attend meetings as required.
- Occasional travel may be necessary.
Non-Essential Duties
- Perform additional tasks as required or requested that may become essential to this role.
Minimum Qualifications
- B.S./M.S./Ph.D. in Physics, Computer Science, Planetary Science, Geoscience, Astronomy, or Engineering is required.
- Experience with UNIX systems is essential.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
- High attention to detail, ability to multitask, and meet demanding deadlines are required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (PowerPoint, Excel, Word) is necessary.
- Occasional travel may be necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
- Programming experience in shell scripting, C/C++, and Python is advantageous.
- Understanding of remote sensing data is preferred.
- Familiarity with statistical data analysis methods is beneficial.
- Experience with command line mapping and image processing tools (GDAL, ISIS, IDL, GMT, ImageMagick) is desirable.
- Knowledge of Martian geology/geography and previous geoscience experience is a plus.
- Proficiency in image editing software such as Photoshop and Affinity is beneficial.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to remain stationary while operating a computer for extended periods, managing multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Clear communication skills in various formats and with diverse individuals amidst constant input from colleagues.
- Capacity to handle stressful deadlines.- Strong analytical skills to comprehend and interpret large datasets both independently and collaboratively.
- Sustained high attention to detail over extended periods is essential.
