About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Sonar Transducer Engineer to join our team at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). As a member of our team, you will contribute to the development of groundbreaking new active sonar technologies, working closely with our government partners and other specialists to create innovative solutions for ocean acoustics.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and test novel active sonar systems incorporating new technologies to exploit the ocean acoustic environment.
  • Design and select transduction devices, sonar systems, and concepts of operation.
  • Operate and test high-powered acoustic sources for underwater applications.
  • Analyze and assess the performance of existing and proposed active sonar systems.
  • Develop new performance models and design prototypes and new applications.
  • Collaborate with government partners and teammates to create new concepts for sonar systems.
  • Partner with other specialists on sea test planning, evaluating new sensor systems, and conducting performance modeling.
  • Craft reports and presentations to communicate results to team members and government partners.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Ocean Engineering, Material Science, or a related discipline.
  • At least 3 years of experience working with transducers, acoustics, and developing sonar systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to attend meetings and participate in field tests.
  • Comfortable working in closed area facilities.
  • Ability to obtain a Secret level security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree, e.g. MS or PhD, or equivalent experience in ocean acoustics.
  • Experience with high-power active sonar systems.
  • At-sea field test experience.
  • Experience with advanced manufacturing techniques, including additive manufacturing.
