About the Role

Join Magic Leap as a Senior Optical Engineer within our Hardware Engineering team, where you will collaborate with a skilled, cross-functional group to innovate and produce cutting-edge optical components for augmented and mixed reality devices.

Your Responsibilities
  • Conduct characterization and measurements of optical components for AR display systems.
  • Design, construct, and validate the performance of specialized optical metrology tools and imaging systems.
  • Analyze novel optical designs statistically and troubleshoot any performance discrepancies.
  • Develop new testing protocols, execute repeatability assessments, and maintain metrology equipment.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in optics or a related field.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a comparable engineering discipline.
  • Experience with optical metrology techniques and instrumentation, including camera and imaging systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of optical assembly, alignment, testing methods, and field evaluation of optical systems in laboratory settings.
  • A practical background in test automation and the development of custom optical testing systems, including precision alignment and rapid prototyping of intricate optical systems.
  • Proficiency in Matlab and/or Python for digital image processing.
Preferred Skills

It would be advantageous if you also have:

  • A Master’s degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience in the AR/VR sector.
  • Knowledge of color science, colorimetry, image quality metrics, and algorithms for digital image processing.
  • Familiarity with commercial optical design software tools, such as Zemax.
  • Experience with statistical processing software like JMP.
  • Opto-mechanical design skills using Solidworks, Fusion 360, etc., along with 3D printing experience.
