Role Overview

The Senior Privacy Engineer serves as a key contributor, technologist, and intermediary with specialized knowledge in the technical aspects of data protection and privacy.

This role entails the development of a comprehensive data protection and privacy compliance framework by devising a strategy to oversee the organization’s data privacy practices, policies, and technologies, ensuring adherence to regulations while safeguarding individual privacy rights.

The Senior Privacy Engineer will collaborate closely with the Data Protection Office, data creators and analysts, product managers, and software developers to deploy privacy-enhancing technologies and tools, integrating privacy by design and default principles into various solutions.

  • Solid grasp of software engineering fundamentals.
  • Competence in interpreting numerical data and understanding statistical principles.
  • Proficiency in data literacy, including data discovery, management, cleansing, and manipulation.
  • High competency in utilizing current programming languages and technologies, such as Java, JavaScript, Python, and HTML, to create robust designs, write code, conduct application testing and debugging, and maintain documentation and procedures for installation and upkeep.
  • Ability to perform operations on extensive datasets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement solutions to ensure that privacy policies are effectively executed to enhance compliance with regulatory data usage requirements, including GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and other data protection regulations.
  • Establish and maintain a data privacy governance framework to ensure policies, procedures, and guidelines for managing personal data throughout its lifecycle, including data tagging, mapping, hygiene, and destruction.
  • Align advanced technologies with Privacy by Design/Default principles from the initial stages of design and development, ensuring that data usage meets established regulatory compliance standards.
  • Collaborate with data product development teams to create new data applications that incorporate privacy features.
  • Engage with internal Data Protection Officers, privacy program managers, product development teams, legal, compliance, governance, and data protection teams.
  • Analyze, design, and program software enhancements for new data streams to develop technical solutions that mitigate privacy vulnerabilities and prevent potential risks.
  • Oversee the management of data protection and privacy policies, ensuring data usability, performance, and the integrity of the privacy program platform.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation for the data protection program, including records of processing activities, data mapping, Data Protection Impact Assessments, and data breach records, while conducting periodic compliance assessments.
  • Assist in managing data subject access requests in compliance with GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and other data protection regulations.
  • Collaborate with users to define system requirements and necessary modifications to existing software.
  • Support the development and maintenance of policies, standards, playbooks, and operating procedures that align with global privacy and data protection objectives.
  • Work with other developers and architects to implement big data solutions that enable data-driven decision-making while safeguarding data assets.
  • Collaborate with the usability team to ensure user-facing privacy controls are effective and user-friendly.
  • Guide the implementation of data anonymization, pseudonymization, and encryption techniques to enhance data privacy protections.
  • Lead the development of new privacy products and features.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in local practices related to data protection and privacy management.
  • Conduct regular privacy assessments of operational processes, policies, and technologies, identifying and mitigating risks through effective tools, training, and guidance.
  • Communicate program progress, escalations, and issue analyses to key stakeholders.
  • Serve as a primary liaison to data science and analytics communities both within and outside the organization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, privacy engineering, or a related field; an advanced degree and/or specialized training in data protection, privacy, or security is advantageous.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in various aspects of a global corporate privacy program, with a minimum of 2 years working independently.
  • Familiarity with key global privacy legislation, including GDPR and CCPA/CPRA.
  • Certifications such as CIPT or CDPSE are preferred.
  • Strong software development expertise.
  • Experience in preparing and leading presentations and discussions in a professional context.
  • Proficient in report writing and management, capable of conducting data protection and privacy compliance assessments and audits.
  • Experience in aligning governance materials, policies, and procedures.

Salary range: $90,000-$160,000 USD.
