About the Role

The Lead Cloud Solutions Engineer plays a pivotal role within our DevOps team. This position is essential for the continuous enhancement of our development and operational efficiencies. The engineer will focus on optimizing and securing systems and applications, safeguarding network boundaries, addressing incidents, and ensuring the protection of sensitive data within our cloud infrastructure. Collaboration with IT, Security, and Engineering teams is crucial to implement and uphold best practices and compliance initiatives.

About the Team

The Auctane DevOps team is dedicated to identifying the right tools and processes necessary for creating an efficient and effective automated environment for our engineering team. A strong emphasis is placed on automating infrastructure, CI/CD, and various other processes. The team continually explores new technologies to accelerate feature delivery, enhance observability, and improve the overall quality of life within the engineering organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and manage a highly scalable, secure, and reliable infrastructure operating 24/7.
  • Ensure Auctane infrastructure platforms are secure and capable of scaling to accommodate rapid growth in transaction volumes during peak business periods, minimizing exposure to single points of failure.
  • Develop and implement infrastructure platforms with top-tier security, responding promptly to emerging security threats and vulnerabilities.
  • Create tools and automated workflows to enable software engineers to test and promote code across various environments with maximum efficiency.
  • Collaborate with software engineering teams throughout the software development lifecycle, fostering an operational mindset to ensure ongoing success.
  • Continuously enhance the platform by introducing new technologies where applicable, driving efficiency, and reducing technical debt.
  • Engage with engineering teams on solution design, capacity planning, and performance optimization.
  • Promote and implement best practices for systems infrastructure and operations.
  • Champion cloud-native design, ensuring our cloud environment is highly available, resilient, and cost-effective.
  • Provide out-of-hours support as part of a scheduled rota or critical project delivery.
  • Ensure data stores handle information in accordance with our policies.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience with a diverse range of AWS services in a production environment; experience across multiple AWS regions and accounts is advantageous.
  • Expertise in creating and managing infrastructure as code using tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation, with a strong passion for immutable infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration, particularly with Kubernetes.
  • Knowledge of Kubernetes applications and concepts, including cluster autoscaling, external DNS, Ingress (NGINX or ALB), and Helm for application deployment.
  • Ability to automate processes through scripting in languages such as Python, BASH, or PowerShell.
  • Experience with monitoring and logging tools such as NewRelic, Datadog, Sumologic, or Elasticsearch.
  • Proficient in managing source code repositories, including branching and merging of code.
  • Experience with build and deployment tools like TeamCity, Octopus, Buildkite, Jenkins, or GitHub Actions.
  • Strong hands-on skills with Linux and Windows, coupled with a solid understanding of DevOps principles.
  • Experience in creating highly available systems and scalable architectures.
  • A continuous drive for automation and efficiency.
  • Experience working in an Agile environment.
  • Familiarity with serverless technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and enhance platforms for continuous delivery.
  • Operational mindset with a focus on observability.
  • Comfortable collaborating with multiple teams and balancing their needs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Analytical mindset with a passion for troubleshooting and resolving complex system engineering challenges.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities.

  • Willingness to participate in conferences, webinars, and meet-ups to share knowledge.

Required Education and Experience

  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Management of Information Systems, Information Security/Assurance, Internal Audit, or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in a DevOps setting.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS in a production context.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the core principles of Cloud engineering (Operational Excellence, Security, Reliability, Performance Efficiency, Cost Optimization, Observability) and a willingness to apply and enhance this understanding.
