Cultural Monitor Job Description

The Cultural Monitor will be responsible for collaborating with construction contractors, archaeologists, and environmental planning consultants to identify and protect cultural resources during ground disturbing activities at construction sites. This role requires a strong understanding of Kumeyaay cultural resources and the ability to work effectively with various stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct construction monitoring and author reports as needed.
  • Assume temporary work stoppages to permit a closer view of potential discoveries.
  • Report any concerns or issues related to cultural finds on the construction site to the ATHPO.
  • Document activities on a daily log, which will be delivered to the ATHPO at the end of each pay period.
  • Have knowledge of CEQA/NEPA and be able to apply it in a practical setting.
  • Be comfortable with strenuous hiking and changing climate conditions.
  • Have knowledge of San Diego and Imperial Valley region in California culture and history.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Be able to identify artifacts and cultural features.
  • Work and communicate efficiently with other agencies, Native American Groups, and construction crews.
Requirements:
  • High School diploma desirable.
  • Must have a certificate of participation in a Kumeyaay Cultural Monitor Training.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ideal candidate will have construction monitoring experience.
  • Cultural Monitor must have 120 hours of trainee experience prior to being assigned to off-site monitoring projects.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and able to meet tight deadlines.
