Position Overview:
The primary objective of this role is to execute the responsibilities of the Assistant Chief within the Audiology and Speech Pathology Service (ASPS).

The incumbent will oversee and allocate tasks daily across all clinical and patient care domains within ASPS.


Organizational Context:
This position is situated within the Audiology and Speech Pathology Service of the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration.
Key Responsibilities:
This role encompasses interdisciplinary functions and may be filled by either a Speech-Language Pathologist or an Audiologist. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Planning, executing, and coordinating comprehensive clinical and administrative services related to modern audiology practices.
  • Acting as a consultant for complex cases, recognized as a subject matter expert in hearing, tinnitus, and balance disorders.
  • Conducting initial performance evaluations and recommending performance ratings for staff.
  • Exercising authority for personnel actions to ensure efficient operations.
  • Providing supervision and administrative management across multiple campuses under the guidance of the Service Chief.
  • Serving as the Acting Chief in the absence of the Service Chief.

The incumbent will demonstrate advanced expertise in contemporary audiology practices, including Progressive Tinnitus Management and Audio-Telehealth programs.

Direct Patient Care:
Responsibilities include delivering a full spectrum of audiology and balance evaluation and treatment services, which involve:

  • Selecting and fitting hearing aids and amplification devices.
  • Conducting auditory rehabilitation and counseling for veterans and their families.
  • Identifying and assessing individuals with hearing disorders, administering a comprehensive range of tests to evaluate hearing loss.

Work Schedule:
Standard work hours are Monday to Friday, with flexibility in start times.

Conditions of Employment:
Applicants must be U.S. Citizens and proficient in written and spoken English. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is mandatory for all healthcare personnel.

Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a Doctor of Audiology (AUD) from an accredited program or a related doctoral degree. A full, unrestricted license to practice audiology is required.

Preferred Experience:
Experience in a supervisory capacity, preferably as an Assistant Chief, Audiologist, or Speech-Language Pathologist.

Physical Requirements:
Moderate lifting and carrying, manual dexterity, and the ability to work in various environmental conditions are essential.
