Role Scope:
The Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist will be responsible for conducting complex laboratory tests, ensuring accurate specimen analysis, maintaining laboratory instruments, and adhering to quality control protocols. This role includes training new staff and may involve overseeing daily lab operations in the absence of a supervisor.
Key Responsibilities:
Essential Duties:
- Conduct phlebotomy and collect specimens as per physician orders.
- Ensure all necessary pre-authorizations and consent forms are completed prior to specimen collection.
- Follow established laboratory protocols for specimen handling, testing, and reporting.
- Perform analyses on Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunology specimens.
- Maintain and operate laboratory equipment, conducting routine maintenance as required.
- Document quality control activities and ensure compliance with laboratory standards.
- Participate in proficiency testing and prepare blood smears for microscopic examination.
- Process specimens for external testing and manage incoming lab orders efficiently.
- Train new laboratory personnel in established procedures and protocols.
- Adhere to safety and compliance regulations, including proper disposal of hazardous materials.
Qualifications:
Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field. A current state license and relevant certification (AMT, ASCP, or equivalent) are preferred. A minimum of five years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting is required.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires a full range of motion, including manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination for operating laboratory equipment. Candidates should be able to sit or stand for extended periods and occasionally lift items weighing up to 40 lbs.
Work Environment:
The role is performed in a laboratory setting with significant interaction among team members and external partners. Frequent travel may be required as part of the position.
