Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Laborer to join our Public Works team in Eastpointe, MI. As a Laborer, you will play a critical role in maintaining and repairing the city's water, sewer, street, and storm drainage facilities and systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform a variety of tasks related to construction, maintenance, and repair of city infrastructure, including installation, repair, and maintenance of water lines, sewer systems, and street infrastructure.
  • Assist with maintenance and repair of city buildings and facilities.
  • Operate a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment, including trucks, backhoes, and other heavy machinery.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and overtime for emergency and scheduled work.
  • Perform routine inspection, preventive maintenance, cleaning, and storage of equipment and tools.
  • Report defects or needed repairs to supervisor or appropriate group leader.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two years of experience in construction, maintenance, or repair, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities.
  • Valid Michigan driver's license.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to practice and promote a safe work environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, positive working relationships with employees and other departments, residents, and the public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Working Conditions

The Laborer will work in a fast-paced environment with frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions, noise, and physical demands. The employee will be required to stand, sit, walk, climb, use hands and fingers, talk, hear, and view and create written documents. The employee will use hand strength to grasp tools and occasionally climb ladders. The employee will frequently reach with hands and arms to operate and repair vibrating machinery, use wrenches, hand tools, etc. and operate motorized equipment and vehicles. The employee must lift and/or remove materials of light to heavy weight (up to 50 pounds) and must push/pull heavy objects (up to 100 pounds).
