Key Responsibilities

As a Facility Maintenance Technician, your responsibilities will encompass, but are not limited to:

  • Fabricating, installing, and repairing wooden and composite structures and items that require precise fitting and structural integrity.
  • Performing maintenance on vehicles, including replacing sensors, water pumps, spark plugs, brake components, exhaust systems, radiator caps, condensers, engine gaskets, various belts and hoses, and complete assemblies, such as engine replacements.
  • Conducting repairs on heavy machinery and equipment, which involves removing, adjusting, or replacing defective or worn-out parts and components.
  • Operating various types of heavy machinery, including bulldozers, excavators, road graders, skid steers, backhoes, wheeled and tracked loaders, and specialized equipment.
  • Maintaining detailed records of maintenance activities for all operated equipment.
Physical Demands:
The role requires significant physical exertion in the operation and upkeep of facilities and equipment. Frequent heavy lifting is necessary, and considerable physical effort is required when using hand and power tools. The job involves extensive movement of arms, legs, and hands, as well as standing, stooping, walking, bending, climbing, and kneeling, often in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The technician may lift, carry, and set up equipment weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, and over 50 pounds with assistance, utilizing jacks, pulleys, dollies, or other lifting devices. Work may occur from ladders, scaffolding, or high places, and in hard-to-reach areas. Frequent arm and leg movements are essential for operating controls, performing repairs, and constructing items.
Work Environment:
The work is performed in both an office setting (5%) and outdoor environments (95%). Employees are exposed to various weather conditions and may encounter running water, fumes, dust, grease, dirt, and moving machinery parts. Outdoor work is conducted in diverse settings, often characterized by steep, uneven, rocky, and slippery terrain, with temperature extremes being common.

Qualifications

By the closing date of this announcement, candidates must meet the qualifications outlined in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X118C, Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupations.

While no specific amount of experience, education, or training is mandated, applicants must demonstrate a minimum level of competency relevant to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire to be rated as qualified. Candidates must meet any screen-out elements at an acceptable level and achieve an average rating of at least "acceptable" across all elements. Only experience, education, or training acquired before the closing date will be considered.

Screen-Out Element:
The initial evaluation will focus on the ability to perform the duties of a maintenance mechanic with minimal supervision.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Understanding of equipment assembly, installation, and repair.
  • Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Operation of motor vehicles.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and specifications, including blueprint reading.

Experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer activities through National Service programs and other organizations. All qualifying experience, including volunteer work, will be credited.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
