Position Overview:

A Polysomnograhic Technologist operates under the guidance of the medical director or designated authority to deliver thorough assessment and management of sleep-related disorders. This includes both in-center and home-based sleep apnea evaluations, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, comprehensive patient care, and direct education for patients.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and set up sleep studies by gathering, analyzing, and integrating patient data to address individual needs, including physical and emotional considerations.
  • Collaborate with the ordering physician or clinical director to finalize testing parameters and procedures.
  • Verify patient identity, collect necessary documentation, and obtain informed consent upon patient arrival.
  • Explain the testing process and orient patients for both in-center and home sleep apnea evaluations.
  • Select and calibrate appropriate equipment to ensure proper functioning before the study.
  • Monitor and document baseline values, ensuring data acquisition is free from artifacts.
  • Record routine observations, including sleep stages and significant clinical events, to aid in the scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
  • Conduct scoring of clinical events following the standards set by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).
  • Generate detailed reports summarizing sleep/wake data and clinical events.
  • Provide education and instruction to patients regarding home sleep apnea testing.
Qualifications:

Graduation from a CoARC accredited respiratory care program with an Associate's Degree is required; a Bachelor's Degree is preferred. Candidates must be a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and possess a valid license in the State of New York or practice under a limited permit.

Alternatively, candidates should hold a current NY State License in Polysomnography and certification from a recognized certification board, such as Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), or Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS).

Licensed Respiratory Therapists without the RRT credential may also be considered, as well as graduate therapists holding a permit to practice.
