Direct Care Specialist

Job Summary
This position provides care and monitors clients with problematic behaviors. The incumbent will monitor the physical and emotional well-being and report immediate concerns to the Nursing and/or Medical staff. The position will participate in treatment team meetings and provide care based on interventions in the residents' plan of care with additional responsibilities, including toileting, assisting with ambulating, transferring from one surface to another, and transporting residents before, during, or after sessions.
Key Responsibilities
Take and record measures of patients' physical condition, using devices such as thermometers or blood pressure gauges.
Monitor patients' physical and emotional well-being and report unusual behavior or physical ailments to medical staff.
Provide nursing, psychiatric, or personal care to mentally ill, emotionally disturbed, or mentally retarded patients.
Observe and influence patients' behavior, communicating and interacting with them and teaching, counseling, or befriending them.
Collaborate with or assist doctors, psychologists, or rehabilitation therapists in working with mentally ill, emotionally disturbed, or developmentally disabled patients to treat, rehabilitate, and return patients to the community.
Requirements
High School Diploma and one (1) year of experience as it pertains to the essential duties of the classification.
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Position will require a New Mexico Nursing Assistant Certification within twelve (12) months of employment.
Successful completion of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) training is required.
Working Conditions
This position is designated as safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules, and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. The incumbent will work with mentally and/or behaviorally challenged residents who may exhibit unpredictable behavior in stressful situations. Transport and assist wheelchair-bound residents to outings. Transfer of patients from bed to wheelchair and visa-versa using proper transfer techniques may be required. Potential exposure to communicable disease and bodily fluids. Will be required to work weekends, holidays, overtime, shift work, and callback hours as needed.
