Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Editor to join our team at Hachette Book Group. As an Associate Editor, you will be responsible for acquiring and editing serious nonfiction books for our Basic Books imprint.

Key Responsibilities
  • Commission and acquire 3-5 books annually
  • Edit manuscripts for publication
  • Negotiate deals with authors and agents
  • Work effectively with authors and agents throughout the publishing process
  • Prepare materials such as acquisition memos, profit and loss statements, and catalog copy
  • Supervise the production process and collaborate with the publicity, marketing, and design teams
Requirements
  • Excellent conceptual and line-editing abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to assess the commercial and scholarly potential of proposed books
  • 3+ years' editorial or equivalent experience
  • Broad knowledge of nonfiction subject areas and publishing categories
  • Contacts among authors, writers, academics, journalists, or literary agents
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with other groups and organizations
  • Demonstrated understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
