Deputy EEO Officer/Accommodations Officer

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced attorney to support the EEO Office within the Office of the General Counsel at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). As the Deputy EEO Officer/Accommodations Officer, you will play a critical role in implementing and administering the Laboratory's EEO and Accommodations policies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Principal EEO Officer/Accommodations Officer in reviewing reports/requests/submissions and investigating alleged policy violations.
  • Review and adjudicate workplace accommodation requests from physically or mentally disabled or pregnant staff.
  • Analyze complaints, determine appropriate jurisdiction, develop investigative plans, conduct fact-finding and necessary legal research, interview involved staff members, and prepare confidential reports of investigation (ROI) and accompanying correspondence.
  • Assist in responding to government investigations and queries as appropriate.
  • Assist the EEO Office in administering APL's EEO program in a matrixed environment.
  • Research legal developments related to EEO and accommodations and keep the Principal EEO Officer/Accommodations Officer apprised of changes in federal laws and policies to help ensure the Laboratory's compliance.
Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor Degree from an American Bar Association-accredited law school or equivalent, admitted to practice law in one or more U.S. jurisdictions, and in good standing in that jurisdiction(s).
  • At least three (3) years of directly applicable experience, including at least one (1) year conducting investigations and writing case reports related to compliance with federal, state, or local anti-discrimination laws and regulations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including excellent verbal and written communication skills, mediation skills, and empathy working with employees at all experience levels and from a wide spectrum of backgrounds.
  • Solid legal and practical research skills.
  • Ability to think critically and make clear and well-reasoned decisions in complex and ambiguous situations.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills, a flexible work style and schedule, and the ability to simultaneously manage multiple challenging projects in a demanding work environment.
  • Demonstrated unquestionable integrity, excellent judgment, discretion, and an ability to establish rapport with individuals who are wrestling with varied challenges and in stressful situations.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • EEO Professional Certificate, Diversity and Inclusion Professional Certificate, or similar accreditation.
  • Experience working with and evaluating medical documentation.
  • Knowledge of research and development activities in a government contracting setting.
  • Experience working as a project manager or at an equivalent level of responsibility.
