Spelman College is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Life Sciences Core Laboratory Manager to oversee the daily operations of the Life Sciences Core Laboratory. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and organization of the facility, as well as providing technical assistance and training to investigators, students, and individuals associated with Spelman-funded projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Generate publication-quality data using laboratory techniques, including cell culture, standard protein and nucleic acid electrophoresis and blotting techniques, and standard molecular techniques.
  • Ensure the function of the life sciences core facility by maintaining the safety, cleanliness, and organization of the facility, and ensuring that needed supplies are in-stock and accessible to individuals using the facility.
  • Manage the use of the life science core facility by providing technical assistance and training to investigators, students, and individuals associated with Spelman-funded projects, and conducting workshops and seminars on techniques and services offered in the facility.
  • Expand the functionality of the life science core to ensure the use of techniques that reflect the current state of the science by coordinating with directors of core labs in the AUC at other institutions, identifying new techniques and instrumentation that could be beneficial to Spelman College investigators, and providing assistance in biomedical imaging and bio-computing areas.
Requirements:
  • Master's degree in a related field with a minimum of three years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate keen problem-solving ability in the laboratory operation.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation and protocols, as well as the ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • College-level math skills and the ability to conduct statistical analysis of data.
  • Ability to write reports, professional correspondence, and procedure manuals, as well as develop presentations and manage the online dissemination of information via a blog, email blast, or other social media platforms.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in a related field with a minimum of three years of relevant experience.
  • Certifications relevant to safety and instrumentation are a plus.
Physical Demands:

The employee is regularly required to talk, sit, walk, and hear, use hands to operate office and laboratory equipment. The employee frequently is required to stand, reach with hands and arms, and to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance.

Work Environment:

This position requires onsite work and is not eligible for remote work.
