This role operates on a schedule of Tuesday to Saturday, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM at a designated work location.


The Facilities Services Department is tasked with the effective and economical operation, upkeep, and management of all facilities at Tufts University, which encompasses approximately 5 million square feet across three campuses.


A wide array of services is provided to support the university campuses, including: maintenance across various trades, capital upkeep, IT systems for operations (work control, time tracking, preventive maintenance), energy and utility management, recycling and waste handling, event coordination, residential facility management, grounds upkeep, and facility condition evaluation and monitoring.

Facilities Services plays a pivotal role in strategizing for the $30M/year investment in deferred maintenance.


Related functions requiring close collaboration with this department include public and environmental health and safety, campus planning and design, and the construction of capital and deferred maintenance projects, including major repairs, renovations, and new constructions.


What We Offer:


Tufts University provides competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package for full-time eligible employees, which includes but is not limited to: 15 vacation days annually for weekly paid employees, 14 paid holidays per year, 2 personal days per year, a university-funded retirement plan covering 5 or 10% of salary over the Social Security Wage Base (vesting period applies), commuter benefits, and tuition remission for eligible staff and their dependents.


Key Responsibilities:


Reporting to facilities management, the HVAC Technician is responsible for diagnosing, maintaining, installing, and repairing various HVAC, heating, and filtration systems to ensure optimal functionality and efficiency.


The HVAC Technician should possess experience in installing, troubleshooting, and servicing chillers, packaged systems, and split systems, as well as equipment for air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, climate control, and air quality systems.


This position typically follows a regular schedule but may require after-hours availability for emergency repairs or coverage during critical weather conditions or significant campus events.

This role is deemed essential as defined in the Tufts University Employee Handbook.

Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience as a licensed HVAC technician, including at least 5 years of current field service experience.
- High School diploma or GED.
- Certification in EPA/DEP and Universal CFC reclamation.
- Valid US Driver's license.
- Valid Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician License.
- Ability to perform minor plumbing and electrical work (as permitted by code).
- Proficiency in reading and understanding blueprints.
- Familiarity with computers in a Windows environment, BAS systems (JCI and Schneider preferred), and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (MAXIMO preferred).
- Effective oral and written communication skills, with the ability to read, write, and comprehend the English language.
- Strong time management and organizational skills, with the ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Professional demeanor and ability to work tactfully with colleagues, faculty, students, and staff in challenging situations.
- Maintenance of a professional appearance and adherence to the university's uniform policy.
- Physical capability to meet all job requirements.
- Solid time management skills, including the ability to multitask and effectively handle unforeseen challenges in a team environment.
- Required to work indoors and outdoors in potentially cramped spaces and during inclement weather year-round.
- Successful completion of CORI/SORI background and driving background checks.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate degree or higher in a relevant field.
- Valid Massachusetts Journeyman Sheet Metal License.
- Trade or vocational school education is strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in using the Maximo CMMS system.

The pay rate for this position is $47.75 / hour.

*Bonus eligibility and criteria:

The new hire must be a regular, full-time university employee and must be employed by the university when the bonus is paid out.

The new hire must represent the candidate's first contact with the university.

The new hire cannot be currently employed at the university.

Non-benefits eligible temporary/contract employees are not eligible.

This is a one-time bonus paid in two installments. $2,500 will be paid at the new hire's 180th day of employment. The remaining installment of $2,500 will be paid at the new hire's one-year anniversary of employment.

All sign-on bonuses are considered compensation according to federal tax guidelines.

The new hire must be in good standing to be eligible for payment.
