Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated professional responsible for the creation, execution, and assessment of tailored Recreational Therapy services for individuals facing physical, social, emotional, and cognitive challenges, grounded in evidence-based practices.

This role is integral to the interdisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care Delivery:
Conducts personalized assessments as per physician directives and formulates individualized treatment strategies.

Engages in treatment team discussions.

Facilitates therapeutic activities in both group and individual settings.

Educates patients and their families.

Oversees discharge planning and compiles discharge summaries in accordance with established protocols.

Identifies and communicates changes in patient care, addressing issues related to scheduling and staffing.

Patient Care Documentation:


Completes initial assessments, treatment plans, care goals, daily session records, patient care conference notes, and discharge instructions as per Recreational Therapy standards.

Acts as a resource to enhance documentation practices for staff and trainees.

Professional Development:
Maintains relevant certifications and licenses.

Ensures compliance with level IV clinical ladder criteria.

Achieves personal objectives during annual evaluations.

Engages in ongoing education.

Supervises interns, practicum students, and volunteers as required.

Meets productivity benchmarks.

Participates in assigned committees.

Assists supervisors with their responsibilities and the overall operations of the Recreational Therapy program.

  • Serves as a mentor and facilitator for the training and education of students, Recreational Therapy staff, and other healthcare professionals.
Provides educational opportunities to non-Recreational Therapy staff, promoting the field's significance.


Seeks specialized training opportunities to enhance skills relevant to specific patient populations and conducts informal educational sessions for staff.


  • Contributes to the establishment of program goals and objectives.
Assists in drafting and refining program policies and procedures.

Helps maintain and organize inventory, program supplies, and equipment.

  • Supervises Recreational Therapy interns.
  • Demonstrates expertise in specific diagnoses and serves as a resource for staff regarding Recreational Therapy interventions.
Takes a proactive role in quality improvement initiatives.

Acts as a resource for ensuring a safe environment for staff and patients.

  • Stays informed about current trends in the field and serves as a resource for alternative treatment options based on patient assessments.
Acts as an advocate for patient care continuity and needs.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Therapeutic Recreation or Recreational Therapy.

Possesses a valid Recreational Therapy license from the State of North Carolina.

Holds certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).

A minimum of 10 years of licensure experience is required.

Demonstrates leadership and advanced knowledge of Recreational Therapy interventions relevant to the patient population.
