Position Summary

The Senior Recreational Therapist is accountable for the creation, execution, and assessment of tailored Recreational Therapy services aimed at patients experiencing physical, social, emotional, and cognitive challenges. This role is integral to the interdisciplinary healthcare team.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care Delivery:
  • Conducts comprehensive assessments as directed by physicians and formulates personalized treatment strategies.
  • Engages in collaborative treatment team discussions.
  • Facilitates therapeutic activities in both group and individual settings.
  • Educates patients and their families on therapeutic processes.
  • Oversees discharge planning and prepares discharge summaries in accordance with established protocols.
  • Identifies and communicates changes in patient conditions and addresses issues related to scheduling and staffing.

Documentation and Compliance:

Ensures accurate completion of initial assessments, treatment plans, care goals, daily notes, and discharge instructions, adhering to Recreational Therapy policies and standards. Acts as a resource for enhancing documentation practices among staff and trainees.


Professional Development:
  • Maintains necessary certifications and licensure.
  • Meets the requirements for the clinical ladder at Level IV.
  • Completes personal development objectives during performance evaluations.
  • Engages in ongoing education to stay current in the field.
  • Supervises interns, students, and volunteers as assigned.
  • Meets productivity benchmarks.
  • Participates in committees as required.
  • Assists supervisors with departmental operations.

Serves as a mentor for the training and education of students and staff across various disciplines, promoting the significance of Recreational Therapy.


  • Identifies opportunities for specialized skill enhancement relevant to specific patient demographics and provides informal training sessions for staff.

Contributes to the development of program objectives and policies, ensuring effective management of resources and supplies.


  • Oversees the training of Recreational Therapy interns.
  • Demonstrates expertise in specific clinical areas and serves as a resource for staff regarding therapeutic interventions.

Leads quality improvement initiatives and ensures a safe environment for patients and staff.


  • Stays informed about current trends in Recreational Therapy and offers alternative treatment strategies based on patient assessments.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Therapeutic Recreation or a related field.
  • Valid Recreational Therapy licensure in the State of North Carolina.
  • Certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification.
  • A minimum of ten years of relevant experience is required.
  • Proven leadership skills and advanced knowledge of therapeutic interventions.
