Surgical Coordinator Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Surgical Coordinator to join our team at Children's National Hospital. As a Surgical Coordinator, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our surgical services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Schedule and coordinate surgical procedures, including verifying insurance eligibility and pre-certifying with insurance companies.
  • Work with parents and other departments to schedule patients in a timely manner, ensuring accurate registration and demographic information.
  • Verify guardianship and custody issues, and coordinate vendor or specialized equipment required for surgical procedures.
  • Manage and maintain accurate records, including patient registration, insurance information, and surgical plans of care.
  • Collaborate with other departments, including nursing, anesthesia, and surgical teams, to ensure seamless coordination of surgical services.
  • Provide exceptional customer service, responding to patient and family needs in a timely and professional manner.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities to improve clinical and administrative processes.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; 3 years of progressive experience in patient registration and scheduling, medical insurance verification, and healthcare business operations preferred.
  • Proficient in Cerner and/or similar EMR systems, CNHS HBOC, and PPM/PSM systems.
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and consumer relations skills required.
  • Knowledge of medical insurance verification procedures, insurance screening, and financial counseling, as well as working knowledge of CPT/ICD-10 coding.
