Job Summary
The University of Texas Permian Basin's College of Arts and Sciences Biology Department is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to fill the position of Research Assistant - Small Animal Care. This role will provide support to the Biology Research Lab, ensuring the well-being and care of small research animals.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide a clean and sterilized living environment for small research animals, including daily checking and supplying animal food and water, monitoring and recording humidity and temperature in the animal room.
- Prepare clean rodent cages with food, bedding, water bottles, and appropriate covering into assembled, sanitized cages.
- Observe animals for signs of disease, illness, or injury and notify the supervisor or designee of any concerns.
- Maintain detailed records of animal facility maintenance schedules and perform pre-cleaning tasks for cage wash machinery.
- Load, operate, and unload steam autoclaves for water bottles and caps, and assist in the preparation of biology lab materials, including chemical solutions, equipment, and supplies.
- Perform general cleaning tasks, including lab glassware washing and animal facility waste management.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, preferably from The University of Texas Permian Basin.
- Ability to learn and maintain animal care skills, equipment operation, and follow specific small animal care directions.
- Preferred qualifications include experience in animal handling and completion of relevant courses, such as General Biology I and/or General Chemistry I.
Working Conditions
This is a part-time position, with a schedule to be developed with the director supervisor, estimated at 13-15 hours per week, with flexibility between 7AM-7PM, Monday-Friday, and 2 hours on weekends, not exceeding 19.5 hours per week.
