Job Summary
The Neurophysiologic Monitoring Specialist is responsible for delivering neurophysiological intraoperative monitoring (NIOM) insights regarding the functional integrity of neural structures in patients under anesthesia during surgical procedures. This role operates under the direct supervision of a physician with specialized training in NIOM. The specialist is adept in executing Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEPs), EMG monitoring, Transcranial Magnetic Motor Evoked Potentials, Pedicle Screw Stimulation, and EEG monitoring. Proficiency in operating monitoring equipment, including programming, data analysis, troubleshooting, and report generation, is essential. The specialist also plays a crucial role in mentoring and training junior technologists. This position caters to a diverse patient demographic, including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics, addressing their specific age-related and cultural needs.

Job Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Conducts all Electrodiagnostic Services protocols, procedures, and assessments as ordered by a physician.
  • Executes all aspects of electroencephalographic and evoked potential testing in the diagnostic laboratory or at the patient bedside, adhering to departmental policies and procedures. This includes SSEP and EMG monitoring, Transcranial Magnetic Motor Evoked Potentials, Pedicle Screw Stimulation, and EEG, both routine and carotid monitoring.
  • Performs all neurodiagnostic procedures for diagnostic purposes and maintains records of reports as observed by the Director of Diagnostic Services.
  • Conducts daily calibration and periodic maintenance of all diagnostic testing equipment, documenting results on maintenance records per departmental policy and reference manuals. Demonstrates proficiency in programming monitoring equipment and troubleshooting, collaborating with machine vendors to optimize equipment performance.
  • Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies necessary for the operation of the diagnostic laboratory.
  • Accurately completes billing charges and maintains records in the department logbook, processing all other departmental and hospital paperwork. Proficient in generating reports for USMON and PRN physicians, ensuring information is correctly uploaded into systems.
  • Reviews patient records, physician orders, protocols, and data to demonstrate the ability to interpret subjective and objective information for patient assessment and order validation. Seeks guidance from the Director/Supervisor and Medical Director for unresolved issues.
  • Assists other staff members in maintaining skills in performing diagnostic testing.
  • Participates in the orientation, mentorship, and education of personnel and students, providing formal and informal teaching/learning opportunities to help personnel achieve and maintain the competence necessary for safe and effective practice.
  • Consistently assesses, identifies, and demonstrates the ability to communicate and address the special needs of patients appropriate to their specific age group (neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, geriatrics) when providing treatment, testing, or patient care, and assesses their level of understanding.
  • Participates in evaluating customer satisfaction and adherence to Guest Relation Standards.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Additional Requirements

Required:
Education - Associate's degree in a related field
Certification - Certification in Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring (CNIM) from an accredited university or training program; Electroencephalography (EEG) Technician Registered from the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) or

Evoked Potential (EP) Technician Registered from the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET)

Preferred:
Experience - 3+ years of EKG/EEG/ECG experience
Education - Bachelor's degree in Health Sciences

Physical Requirements: Heavy work - exerting up to 25 pounds of force constantly, and/or up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 100 pounds of force seldomly to move objects. Possible exposure to radiation and frequent exposure to contaminated needles and infectious body substances. Requires the ability to work designated shift lengths (including 8 and 12 hours), which may include night shifts or occasional irregular hours.
