Job Summary

The Transmission Groundman position is an entry-level role in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical transmission systems. This position requires a strong foundation in electrical theory and a commitment to working safely.

Responsibilities
  • Assists linemen in gaining poles, framing crossarms, assembling guys, and splicing wire.
  • Loads and unloads material, raises material and tools on poles or towers using handlines, and dismantles material removed from lines and places it on trucks.
  • Digs holes for poles and anchors, drives ground rods, and pulls wires and guys to tension.
  • Attends winches while handling heavy material and attends reels while stringing wire.
  • Makes and maintains trails, fells trees, burns brush and trimmings, and hoes weeds around poles and towers.
  • May patrol lines in mountain areas to observe conditions such as trees in line, brush in the right of way, slides, and washouts.
  • Learns tools, materials, and methods of line construction and maintenance.
  • Operates trucks and power equipment used in overhead and underground line construction, and may occasionally operate vehicles up to 12,000 lb. unladen weight class.
  • Follows safety protocols and safe work practices.
  • Performs other miscellaneous manual labor functions as directed.
Qualifications
  • General knowledge of electrical theory.
  • High school diploma or recognized equivalent.
  • Commitment to working safely.
  • Willingness to travel at any time, work overtime, and perform storm work.
  • Highly motivated self-starter with a desire to continue learning.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

This job operates in a field environment, requiring extended periods of bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, lifting in awkward positions, standing, and twisting. The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

This position is physically active, with lifting required. Must be able to bend and lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more or 20 inches or less, with the ability to judge distance and space relationships. Precise hand-eye coordination. Ability to identify and distinguish colors.
