Job Description

The Drive Inverter team at Tesla is responsible for designing the power electronics that move our cars - quickly, efficiently, and reliably. Delivering hundreds of kilowatts of power from the battery to the motor, the drive inverter integrates high voltage power electronics, low voltage circuits, controls, functional safety, thermal management, and mechanical packaging.

Responsibilities
  • End-to-end ownership of new inverter PCBA designs, including specifications, architecture, schematic capture, PCB layout, board bring up, validation, and overseeing reliability and functional testing.
  • Collaboration with cross-functional teams (mechanical, firmware, test, reliability, etc.) to see products through high-volume manufacturing.
  • Design and execute high voltage and high current validation of new inverter designs.
  • Debug complex component interactions at the vehicle level.
Requirements
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Digital and analog circuit design, including high voltage circuits or power supply design.
  • Printed circuit board design (we use Altium) and initial bring-up: debugging, soldering, wiring, mechanical assembly.
  • Familiarity with embedded firmware, microcontrollers, and their peripherals, Python scripting or similar.
  • Familiarity with lab equipment, including oscilloscopes, function generators, power supplies.
  • Power semiconductors (MOSFETs, IGBTs).
  • Electric motors, thermal design, and/or mechanical design.
  • Automotive networking (CAN, LIN, Ethernet).
  • Basic control theory, including importance of sensor bandwidths, filtering.
  • Automation of lab equipment (GPIB/SCPI/VISA).

Expected Compensation: $84,000 - $186,000/annual salary, depending on level + cash and stock awards + benefits. Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
