POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:

ROLE OVERVIEW:

The individual will be an integral part of the hemodialysis healthcare team, ensuring the delivery of safe and effective dialysis treatments for patients under the direct oversight of a licensed nurse. This role adheres to FMCNA policies, procedures, and training, while complying with all relevant regulations set forth by corporate, state, and federal agencies. Responsibilities include the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and hygienic work environment, and supporting the FMCNA's commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives aimed at enhancing patient satisfaction.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient Education:

  • Assist healthcare team members in delivering patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), and Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), as well as information on disease processes and access.

Patient Care:

  • Greet assigned patients and check on their well-being since their last treatment.
  • Assess vascular access for patency.
  • Collect necessary pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight.
  • Conduct vascular access evaluations and cannulation.
  • Administer Heparin as delegated or permitted by state law.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD).
  • Monitor patients' responses to dialysis therapy and address any intradialytic issues as directed by physician orders.
  • Document all relevant treatment information accurately and timely.
  • Ensure safety alarms are properly enabled and perform machine safety checks according to facility policies.
  • Prepare and collect laboratory specimens as required.

Maintenance and Technical Duties:

  • Ensure a clean and safe environment, including the disinfection of dialysis machines and surrounding areas.
  • Conduct necessary preparations for dialysis treatments and perform required machine alarm testing.
  • Handle blood spills promptly and according to facility protocols.

Documentation and Record Keeping:

  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities and document treatment data accurately.
  • Prepare patient charts and ensure all necessary paperwork is completed.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory samples according to specifications.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This role involves physical demands typical of a healthcare setting, including potential exposure to infectious materials.
  • Employees may need to lift and move patients, requiring assistance for heavier items.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • A high school diploma or G.E.D. is required.
  • Must meet state or national certification requirements as mandated by the Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS).

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • A minimum of two years of prior patient care experience in a hospital or related facility is preferred.
  • Successful completion of the FMCNA dialysis training program and CPR certification is necessary for continued employment.
