Position Overview

Starting Salary Range: $36, $44,280.00 annually

Under guidance, this role entails overseeing and managing a team dedicated to the upkeep and enhancement of the Parks & Recreation Department's facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Directs the activities of team members on designated projects related to construction, upkeep, or other park maintenance tasks.
  • Collaborates with assigned teams to ensure high-quality workmanship and appropriate materials are utilized; provides training to park maintenance crews.
  • Organizes necessary tools and materials for daily tasks.
  • Maintains and cleans equipment regularly.
  • Records and reports any landscape damage due to incidents.
  • Completes required documentation.
  • May assist in planning seasonal landscape color and chemical application initiatives. Operates machinery such as tractors, tillers, trucks, and backhoes. May need to drive city vehicles with trailers.
  • Uses small power tools including tillers, push mowers, edgers, weed eaters, and chainsaws.
  • Handles all aspects of park maintenance including litter removal, restroom upkeep, mowing of parks and medians, tree and shrub trimming, planting, watering, spraying, and weeding as necessary; digging ditches, spreading gravel and sand, and laying sod.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED equivalent is mandatory.

A minimum of two (2) years of experience in general park maintenance, irrigation, or as a parks crew leader is required.

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may also be considered.
Skills and Competencies
  • Understanding of park maintenance practices, including property and equipment upkeep, best practices, proper chemical handling, irrigation systems, and minor repair methods related to park maintenance.
  • Familiarity with city and departmental procedures, regulations, and best practices related to parks.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, rules, and regulations effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills and efficient time management.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact professionally with others.
  • Clear and effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proven ability to lead team members in a productive and proactive manner.
  • Ability to provide effective customer service and work independently with discretion.
  • Capability to perform physically demanding tasks consistently.
  • Ability to read and interpret various documents and write reports with proper grammar and formatting.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to utilize resources efficiently.
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and perform tasks accurately under pressure.

Special Requirements
Mobility in outdoor environments with varying terrain and weather conditions is necessary.

Must be available for on-call duties outside of regular hours.

Flexibility to work weekends and holidays as required.

This position is classified as safety-sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Licenses & Certifications
A valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record is required.

Texas Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator Certification is preferred.

Work Environment

Moderate exposure to various environmental elements. This role involves continuous outdoor work with frequent exposure to weather conditions, noise, and dust. Physical demands include lifting, carrying, digging, and operating machinery.
