The ideal candidate will possess the ability to conduct comprehensive history and physical evaluations. Responsibilities include assessing, planning, and monitoring various co-morbid medical conditions that arise from critical illness or injury. The role involves managing ventilator settings, administering vasopressors, and addressing complex clinical scenarios. Surgical procedures performed include, but are not limited to: Chest Tube placement, Central Line insertion, Arterial Line placement, Bronchoscopy, and assisting with bedside Tracheostomy and Percutaneous Gastrostomy Tube placements.

The Division is structured into the Sections of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Acute/Emergency General Surgery, comprising 17 surgeons and 15 Advanced Practice Providers. Our Trauma and Surgical Critical Care services are delivered at Atrium Charlotte, a tertiary/quaternary care facility and ACS-verified Level I trauma center, which manages approximately 7000 Trauma Code activations and 4500 trauma admissions annually. The Surgical Critical Care team addresses around 1500 patient consults each year across various specialties, including Transplant, HEENT, Surgical Oncology, Emergency General Surgery, Orthopedic, Hepatobiliary, Trauma, and Vascular.

Recently, Atrium Health and Wake Forest Baptist Health, including Wake Forest School of Medicine, have unified as a single enterprise, enhancing our capacity to provide personalized care for over 15 million patient encounters each year.

Position Overview:

  • Participate in rotational shifts and assignments covering both Surgical Critical Care and Trauma service lines.
  • Surgical Critical Care coverage is required 24/7/365.
  • Trauma coverage includes Monday through Sunday, with additional trauma clinic responsibilities.
  • Weekend and holiday coverage is mandatory on an alternating basis.
  • Opportunities for teaching residents and/or APP Fellows are available.

Qualifications:

Candidates must hold or be eligible for a DEA license and be authorized to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in their respective state. Eligibility for prescriptive authority through the Board of Nursing or Medical Board in North Carolina is required. A BLS for Healthcare Provider certification from AHA is mandatory, with an expiration date exceeding 90 days from the start of practice. Candidates should demonstrate strong critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and the ability to prioritize effectively.

  • Nurse Practitioner: A Master's Degree or Doctorate of Nursing Practice is required, along with a valid Registered Nurse license. Certification in the relevant area from a nationally recognized certifying body is necessary, with Acute Care board certification required based on the population and acuity served. A minimum of 1 year of experience as an ACNP or AGANP is required.
  • Physician Assistant: Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program is required, with a Master's Degree preferred. Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is preferred, along with a minimum of 1 year of experience.
