Houston, Texas, United States Houston Methodist Specialty Physician Group Full time

Position Overview
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) at Houston Methodist Specialty Physician Group plays a crucial role in supporting the examination and treatment of patients under the guidance of clinical and administrative leadership.

This role encompasses assisting healthcare providers in delivering patient care across designated clinical settings. The CMA is involved in patient assessments, procedures, diagnostic evaluations, treatments, and dressing modifications.

Key Responsibilities
This position entails performing essential administrative tasks while adhering to CLIA, HIPAA, NCQA, and government regulations, alongside organizational policies and procedures.

The CMA actively engages in patient care under the supervision of a physician, operating within the medical assistant's scope of practice. Responsibilities may also include scheduling patient appointments, ensuring compliance with medical necessity, and verifying eligibility for care.

Team Collaboration
Fostering a positive work atmosphere with the interprofessional care team is vital. The CMA is expected to participate in collaborative efforts by responding constructively to requests for assistance and working cohesively with colleagues to enhance overall productivity and resolve issues.

Effective communication with peers, staff, and physicians is essential, promoting mutual understanding and clarity in all interactions.

Patient Care Duties
The CMA provides care to patients visiting the clinic, guided by a Physician, Registered Nurse, or clinic leadership, while embracing principles of cultural diversity and inclusion.

In collaboration with the healthcare team, the CMA anticipates the needs of the patient population and communicates effectively with patients to obtain and document vital signs (e.g., pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), chief complaints, and medication reviews, as well as medical and social histories.

Documentation of care provided, diagnostic measurements, treatments, and procedures in the patient's electronic medical record (EMR) is required, following established policies and procedures.

Follow-up with patients is crucial to ensure adherence to recommendations, medications, lab/x-ray results, and other necessary visits.

Quality and Safety Standards
The CMA is responsible for preparing treatment areas for patient examinations and assisting in the maintenance of medical equipment and supplies.

Observations regarding patient conditions must be reported to the physician or nurse to achieve optimal patient outcomes, ensuring patient privacy and safety.

In collaboration with senior staff, the CMA will sterilize instruments and equipment, contributing to quality and safety initiatives through peer accountability and reporting near misses.

Resource Management
Inventory management and stocking of exam rooms are part of the CMA's responsibilities. Efficient use of resources is expected, minimizing waste and managing time effectively.

Professional Development
The CMA is encouraged to engage in performance improvement projects and professional development activities, seeking guidance and validation of skills as necessary.

Maintaining current certifications and completing required continuous training is essential for this role.

Qualifications
A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with two years of experience in a clinic or outpatient setting, or one year in a novice position.

Required certifications include RMA, CMA, or equivalent, along with BLS certification.

Preferred qualifications include CPT certification.

Skills and Competencies
The CMA must demonstrate proficiency in essential skills, effective communication, and the ability to maintain accurate medical records. A commitment to providing safe, patient-centered care is paramount.

This job description is not exhaustive; additional duties may be assigned as necessary. Houston Methodist reserves the right to modify job responsibilities as needed.
