This nonprofit organization is dedicated to the stewardship of San Bruno Mountain through conservation efforts, ecological restoration, educational initiatives, and advocacy in collaboration with local communities.

Position Overview

The Mission Blue Nursery specializes in cultivating native plants sourced entirely from seeds and cuttings gathered on San Bruno Mountain, which are then utilized for ecological restoration projects. Additionally, we engage in public plant sales and fulfill contracts to provide plants for sustainable landscaping in urban settings, including community gardens and parks.

The Nursery Fellow will be responsible for the overall upkeep and plant production activities at the Mission Blue Nursery, as well as coordinating volunteer efforts and weekly programs. Volunteers play a crucial role in our operations, and the Nursery Fellow will work collaboratively with them to prepare for and conduct quarterly plant sales and support ecological restoration and educational events.

Employment Details

  • Part-Time position, requiring 24 to 34 hours per week based on individual availability.
  • Flexible scheduling options available for preferred workdays and hours.
  • Mandatory attendance on Wednesdays and at least one Saturday each month.
  • At-Will Employment status.

Compensation

Hourly wage of $22.50, inclusive of Paid Time Off, Paid Sick Leave, and Paid Holidays.

Key Responsibilities

Mission Blue Nursery Operations (~75% to 80% of time)

Volunteer Coordination

  • Organize and facilitate nursery volunteer workdays, including preparation and cleanup.
  • Collaborate with team members to integrate nursery activities into educational field trips.
  • Communicate effectively with volunteers regarding event details and registration.
  • Guide volunteers in proper techniques for various nursery tasks, including potting, weeding, and seed collection.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in optimal condition.
  • Develop knowledge of native species and share insights with participants.

Plant Cultivation

  • Gather seeds and cuttings from the mountain.
  • Document collection activities in compliance with our collection permit.
  • Process seeds and cuttings appropriately.
  • Implement necessary seed treatments and prepare soil mixes.
  • Utilize organizational records to manage propagation and collection schedules.

Plant Maintenance

  • Manually irrigate plants as needed and maintain irrigation systems.
  • Adhere to Best Management Practices to mitigate pests and diseases.
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization within the nursery.
  • Perform regular maintenance tasks such as weeding, pruning, and fertilizing.

Sales and Customer Service

  • Assist in planning and executing quarterly plant sales.
  • Provide customer service and manage transactions during sales events.

Ecological Restoration & Education (~20% to 25% of time)

Community Restoration Initiatives

  • Collaborate with team members to lead ecological restoration volunteer days.

Educational Outreach

  • Facilitate school field trips to the nursery and surrounding areas.
  • Contribute to the development of educational materials.

Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Able to work effectively with diverse groups.
  • Capable of following instructions and safety protocols.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Familiarity with digital tools and platforms.
  • Knowledge of native plants or experience in horticulture is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Work is primarily outdoors, subject to varying weather conditions.
  • Physical tasks may include hiking, standing, kneeling, and lifting up to 40 pounds.
