Job Overview

The Medical Supply Technician plays a crucial role within the Sterile Processing Service, contributing to the efficient operation of healthcare facilities.

Qualifications

Citizenship Requirement: Applicants must be U.S. citizens, as non-citizens can only be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable.

Experience: A minimum of one year of experience at the GS-5 level is required.

Specialized Experience: This may include:

  • Processing, assembling, troubleshooting, and sterilizing reusable medical devices.
  • Knowledge of decontamination and cleaning procedures.
  • Familiarity with aseptic techniques and operation of sterilization equipment.

Additionally, candidates should demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of surgical instruments utilized in clinical settings.
  • Understanding of universal safety precautions to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Proficiency in medical terminology, anatomy, and sterilization principles.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions and procedures.
  • Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, as mandated by regulations.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience in processing endoscopes and certification from recognized sterile processing organizations is preferred.

Physical Demands

This position involves working in various environments, including decontamination and preparation areas. The role requires:

  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Frequent bending and lifting of items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Dexterity and visual acuity for handling intricate instruments.

Incumbents may encounter challenging conditions, including temperature variations and exposure to potentially hazardous materials.

Key Responsibilities

The Medical Supply Technician is responsible for:

  • Receiving and processing contaminated medical devices.
  • Disassembling devices and selecting appropriate cleaning methods.
  • Inspecting and packaging items for sterilization.
  • Documenting operational checks and maintaining accurate records.
  • Transporting medical devices throughout the facility.

Accountability for maintaining high standards of sterile processing is essential, along with the ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.

Work Schedule

Rotating shifts and on-call duties may be required based on departmental needs.
