Job Summary:

The Assistant General Counsel is responsible for providing expert legal counsel and risk assessment to Sysco Corporation and its sites globally. This role serves as the primary legal support for senior management, company executives, and leadership of key GSC functions.

This position manages and selects outside counsel, develops strategies for litigation and commercial contracts, and directs pre-litigation employment matters and responses to complaints received by opposing counsel and government agencies.

The Assistant General Counsel partners with leadership of key GSC functions, including Corporate Claims, Human Resources, Sales, Operations, Finance, Merchandising, Safety, and Compliance, to support key initiatives for the overall organization.


Responsibilities:
  1. Provide daily advice and counsel regarding legal compliance and risk avoidance.
  2. Direct, manage, and develop strategy for respective legal matters.
  3. Manage outside counsel fees and costs to maintain efficiency.
  4. Direct, manage, and develop strategy for responses to complaints filed with government agencies and other pre-litigation matters.
  5. Participate in cross-functional teams to provide legal guidance and support the development and execution of enterprise-wide initiatives, policies, and strategies.
  6. Prepare materials and conduct training for internal business clients regarding strategic initiatives and other relevant legal matters.

Requirements:
  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
  • 6+ years of legal experience, including at least 5 years practicing and litigating at either a law firm or a company (can be a combination).

Skills:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to provide sound, clear legal advice to senior executives and other Sysco senior leaders.
  • Creative problem-solving and aptitude to work collaboratively.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently manage multiple time-sensitive projects simultaneously.
  • Strong leadership skills and client service orientation.
  • Ability to manage a high volume of employment, litigation, and contract matters.
  • Above-average command of English, both oral and written, and excellent grammar, proofreading, punctuation, and spelling skills.
  • Above-average arithmetical skills.
