Position Overview

As a Wildlife Enforcement Officer I/II, you will operate under general supervision to uphold County regulations and State laws related to the licensing, adoption, impounding, and humane treatment of animals. Your responsibilities will include the collection and transportation of animals to the shelter, ensuring their care and feeding, and maintaining shelter facilities.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will be expected to:
  • Patrol designated areas to investigate and capture domestic animals.
  • Respond to public inquiries regarding stray, dangerous, or injured animals.
  • Conduct thorough investigations of animal bites and enforce quarantine measures when necessary.
  • Educate the public on animal control laws and policies.
  • Issue licenses and maintain accurate records of animal impoundments and licenses.
  • Provide care for animals housed in the shelter, including feeding and cleaning.
  • Perform euthanasia in accordance with established protocols.
  • Utilize computer systems for data entry and retrieval.
  • Document cases for potential prosecution of animal abuse.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement agencies to enforce animal control statutes.

Essential Qualifications

Knowledge:
  • Understanding of animal care and feeding practices.
  • Familiarity with common animal diseases and their treatment.
  • Safe handling techniques for various animal sizes.
  • Awareness of animal behavior characteristics.
Skills:
  • Ability to learn and apply relevant County and State ordinances.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Competence in driving and operating vehicles safely.
  • Capability to handle animals compassionately and safely.

Training and Experience

A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required. Experience in public interaction and animal care is essential. For the Animal Control Officer II level, at least one year of relevant experience is necessary.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid California Driver's license and completion of Peace Officer Standards and Training is required within specified timeframes.
