Job Overview:

Responsible for the upkeep and monitoring of research animal welfare under the guidance of veterinary professionals or study protocols.

Core Responsibilities:

  1. Adhere to all safety and security protocols during work hours by maintaining a thorough understanding of relevant regulations and complying with all applicable SOPs/ WI documents, and other internal guidelines.
  2. Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, procedures, and data collection methods throughout the duration of a study.
  3. Administer preventative and maintenance care for various animal species.
  4. This may involve conducting weight assessments, vaccinations, sample collections for clinical evaluations, administering medications (via all routes), and performing physical examinations.
  5. Support post-operative care by managing animal recoveries, conducting pain assessments, documenting post-procedure cases, applying and removing bandages, maintaining and collecting samples from indwelling catheters, administering medications including emergency treatments as necessary, utilizing anesthesia equipment, monitoring vital signs across species, and observing for any unusual changes.
  6. Effectively communicate through documentation in electronic medical records, emails, and verbal interactions with veterinary staff.
  7. Process clinical pathology samples internally and coordinate external sample submissions to various laboratories.
  8. Ensure all animals receive adequate enrichment and social housing conditions.
  9. Maintain cleanliness and organization of assigned laboratory areas by assisting with animal care and kennel maintenance as required, while reporting any health concerns to veterinary staff and study directors.
  10. Accurately document and back up all necessary records to ensure adherence to all applicable regulations, including animal treatment logs, data forms, and medication records, by meticulously recording data, issues identified, resources consulted, and actions taken.
  11. Coordinate inventory management with laboratory personnel by gathering information on new or updated supplies and equipment from relevant vendors and discussing any supply/equipment concerns with management.
  12. Induce and maintain anesthesia, monitor physiological status, and take appropriate measures for animals involved in acute or chronic studies.
  13. Stay informed about all equipment, support instruments, testing apparatus, and both routine and advanced veterinary techniques by consulting relevant literature and participating in necessary training.
  14. Ensure animal health throughout the study by collaborating with veterinary staff on diagnosis and treatment, administering prescribed therapies, and monitoring responses to treatments.
  15. Conduct pre-purchase physical examinations and vaccination history assessments, communicating the suitability of animal shipments to veterinary staff and vendors.
  16. May assist with or conduct necropsies under the supervision of veterinary professionals/pathologists, ensuring proper labeling and documentation of specimens, photographing gross pathology, coordinating histopathological examinations, and logging histopathological reports promptly upon completion of necropsy.
  17. May assist in pathology evaluations by preparing, sending, and receiving specimens to/from contract laboratories in accordance with GLP guidelines.
  18. May manage laboratory projects as directed by management by regularly updating the status of ongoing projects and coordinating the maintenance of all installed laboratory equipment.
  19. Utilize extensive research experience to contribute to study design and execution.
  20. This may involve providing input on study design, procedures, and protocols, planning and communicating study timelines, setting up and maintaining testing equipment, interpreting data, and ensuring proper record retention.
