LEAD TECHNICIAN, STARSHIP THERMAL SHIELDING

The Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) team is at the forefront of addressing the most challenging issues in space exploration by designing and fabricating the heat shields for our advanced rockets and spacecraft. This critical hardware must endure the harshest conditions known to humanity while safeguarding our vehicles during atmospheric re-entry. The Lead Technician will oversee a team of operators, fabricators, and technicians responsible for constructing the ceramic heat shield tiles for Starship. This role requires consistent oversight of progress on a daily and hourly basis.

The Lead Technician plays a vital role in fostering a culture of accountability and responsibility, emphasizing individual growth and team development. It is essential for the Lead Technician to be an inspiring leader, often collaborating closely with their team to fulfill the mission of returning astronauts to the United States.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee daily shop floor operations, including scheduling and workflow management.
  • Manage a team of approximately 20 technicians, handling all aspects of performance management.
  • Continuously enhance process efficiency, manpower utilization, and overall productivity.
  • Review and recommend modifications to work instructions in collaboration with engineering and shop floor teams.
  • Evaluate and identify the necessary skill sets for team members.
  • Determine training requirements and develop programs to address current and future mission objectives.
  • Provide data and reports to support departmental performance metrics and improvement goals.
  • Monitor labor hours and overtime, implementing strategies for time management and improvement.
  • Achieve production targets by setting clear job expectations; plan, monitor, and evaluate job outcomes.
  • Effectively organize, assign, and track work deliverables for the team, ensuring smooth transitions through multi-shift schedules.
  • Encourage collaboration within and across departments.
  • Ensure product quality and adherence to specifications.
  • Maintain inventory of tools and consumables.
  • Enhance safety and efficiency in the work area through regular audits and continuous improvement initiatives.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years in a leadership role.
  • At least 4 years of experience in manufacturing or production environments.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in applying lean manufacturing principles and efficiency methodologies.
  • Over 10 years of experience in final assembly and production within a fast-paced aerospace manufacturing setting.
  • Proven track record of transitioning teams and processes from development to production.
  • Familiarity with Design for Manufacturability, Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and Failure Mode Effects Analysis.
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) with Engineering and Production teams.
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing work assignments and a dynamic work environment.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with a focus on efficiency and accuracy.
  • Prior leadership experience in military or aerospace sectors.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods (minimum of 8 hours).
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as necessary, with anticipated travel of 25%.
  • Capability to travel for both short and extended durations as required.
  • Must pass background checks as required for specific facilities.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay Range:
Lead Technician: $105,000 - $135,000 per year

Your actual level and base salary will be determined based on job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is part of a comprehensive rewards package at SpaceX, which may include long-term incentives such as company stock, stock options, or cash awards, along with potential bonuses and an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Additional benefits include access to medical, vision, and dental coverage, a 401(k) retirement plan, disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various discounts and perks. Employees may accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and are eligible for 10 or more paid holidays annually.
