Practical Nurse

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Practical Nurse to join our team at the State of Louisiana. As a Practical Nurse, you will provide basic nursing care to assigned patients/clients in stable conditions and in predictable situations in accordance with the Professional Nurses Practice Act.
Job Summary:The Practical Nurse will be responsible for:
- Assigning, supervising, and directing the work performed by paraprofessionals and Practical Nurses of a lower level.
- Providing sick call services to inmates housed in correctional facilities.
- Providing emergency nursing care to inmates seeking access to medical treatment during non-sick call hours in correctional facilities.
- Implementing the assigned aspects of the patient teaching and discharge plan.
- Intervening appropriately and responding to deteriorating condition of patient.
- Processing admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Conducting and documenting data base to include psychosocial and physical screening of patient and/or family.
- Assisting in developing nursing plan of care.
- Preparing monthly nursing reports, charts, and other medical records.
- Reviewing accident and seizure reports.
- Providing individual health counseling concerning diet, prenatal care, family planning, VD, and TB control under the direct supervision of Registered Nurse.
- Documenting activities in service records.
- Assessing patient immunization status and administering appropriate immunizations.
- Performing laboratory procedures such as hemoglobin, lead screening, electrophoresis, urinalysis, hearing, vision, and measurements.
- Applying and changing dressings as assigned.
- Using medical equipment, i.e., intermittent suction and continuous suction machine.
- Maintaining routine enteral feedings.
- May act as co-therapist in a group setting.
- May instruct staff in basic nursing techniques.
- May orient and train Practical Nurses of a lower level.
- May schedule appointments for dental, eye, speech, language, and hearing care.
To be considered for this position, you must possess a valid Louisiana license or temporary permit to practice practical nursing or a multi-state license issued by a Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC/eNLC) state, plus two years of practical nursing experience.
