About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Bridge Engineer to join our team at the Virginia Department of Transportation. As a key member of our Structural Design Section, you will be responsible for designing, analyzing, and checking complex bridges and ancillary structures for new construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and analyze structural elements, including bridges and sign/signal structures, to ensure safe load carrying capacity and compliance with AASHTO and VDOT specifications.
  • Manage projects, including coordinating design activities with other sections, divisions, and consultants, and ensuring effective development of bridge projects.
  • Provide technical guidance and support related to bridge construction activities, issues, and problems, and develop effective and economical recommendations to respond to construction problems and other bridge-related inquiries.
  • Lead or participate in project teams, ensuring timely communications between project team members and stakeholders, and resolving challenges to enhance team performance.
Requirements
  • Experience applying civil engineering principles and practices related to structural engineering, including strength of materials, statics, and structural analysis.
  • Experience in structural steel design, reinforced and prestressed concrete design, and soil mechanics.
  • Knowledge of specifications, codes, and regulations related to structural design, including AASHTO and LRFD structural design standards.
  • Ability to manage projects, review and administer consultant design contracts, and communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers.
  • Valid Professional Engineer license and valid driver's license required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the structural analysis and rating of existing bridges and sign/signal structures.
  • Experience in bridge design using AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications.
  • Experience in bridge repair and rehabilitation.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently plan, coordinate, design, review, or supervise the design of complex bridge structures and manage consultant contracts.
