Real Time Controls Software Engineer

Job Summary:

The University of Arizona is seeking a highly skilled Real Time Controls Software Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our Software and IT group, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining software packages for the telescope control sub-systems. Your expertise in real-time applications, digital signal processing, and interfaces with PLC, fieldbus, and motion controllers will be essential in ensuring the smooth operation of our telescope infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop software packages for the telescope control sub-systems, including interfaces with low-level DSP, PLC, fieldbus, micro-controller devices, and motion controllers.
  • Monitor sub-systems health, faults, and performance, and diagnose and address operational issues in collaboration with a team of engineers and mountain staff.
  • Provide tools and solutions for uninterrupted operation during science execution, and identify opportunities for improvement and contribute new designs and developments to leverage new technology and improve reliability.
  • Prepare technical reports and present training and informational briefings for Observatory technical staff.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific or engineering discipline, or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional-level experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience with VxWorks, VME (PowerPC), DSP (Bittware), PLC interfaces, micro-controllers (PIC, 8051), Linux, GUI (Qt), and git.
