Position: Metallurgical and Materials Engineer
Department: Engineering Research & Development
Reports to: Director, Metallurgy and Materials R&D
Location: Grovetown, GA
Shift: 1st
FLSA Status: Salary exempt

OVERVIEW:

This role encompasses a wide array of tasks and projects related to metallurgical and materials research and development, alongside routine evaluations and investigations. The position provides technical support to various stakeholders and departments. As a leader in the design and manufacturing of slurry pumps and materials technology, this role is crucial in advancing our business objectives.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Utilizes extensive expertise in metallurgical and materials activities for testing and R&D projects.
  • Explores opportunities and formulates proposals for new and enhanced materials (including metallic, non-metallic, and composites), particularly for wear and wear-corrosion applications in slurry pumps and related components.
  • Defines testing and experimental scopes for R&D initiatives employing experimental design principles.
  • Conducts materials characterization through various techniques, including optical and electron microscopy.
  • Engages with a diverse range of materials essential for KSB products and applications, such as high-alloy cast irons, steels, composites, elastomers, ceramics, and coatings.
  • Designs and executes materials testing and evaluation in collaboration with technicians and other engineers, covering corrosion tests, wear tests, mechanical testing, thermal analysis, and simulations.
  • Performs materials evaluation and failure analysis to ascertain properties, root causes of failures, and quality enhancements.
  • Offers technical assistance in materials-related tasks to various departments.
  • Composes internal reports and professional publications based on research and testing outcomes.
  • Collaborates with other departments on projects involving materials selection, capital projects, customer support, and related initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • B.S. or advanced degree in Material Science and Metallurgical Engineering is preferred.
  • Candidates with different educational backgrounds but substantial work and research experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in metallurgical and materials research, testing, applications, and failure analysis.
  • Experience with wear-resistant materials such as high-alloy cast irons, elastomers, composites, and material designs for industrial applications is advantageous.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Primarily desk-based duties.

  • No travel is required for this position.
