Position Title: Surgical Technologist

Department: Outpatient Services

Reports To: Outpatient Services Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for performing essential duties in the surgical environment. This role involves assisting in patient care and related services within the Surgery Suite, under the supervision of the Circulating Nurse and Outpatient Services Manager. The individual will prepare necessary supplies and equipment for surgical procedures while adhering to principles of asepsis and sterile technique.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Prepare and organize surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment required for various surgical procedures.
  2. Exhibit proficiency and technical knowledge in the handling and care of surgical instruments and materials.
  3. Assist in the positioning and draping of patients for surgical interventions.
  4. Accurately identify and manage medications that are passed onto the sterile field.
  5. Perform scrub duties, including instrument handling, retractor holding, suture cutting, and maintaining a sterile environment.
  6. Ensure the proper handling and care of specimens during surgical procedures.
  7. Maintain cleanliness and organization of instruments stored in the Surgery Department.
  8. Adhere to safety, sanitation, and proper handling protocols, including sterilization and high-level disinfection procedures.
  9. Foster effective communication with patients, medical staff, and other personnel.
  10. Contribute to cost containment efforts within the department.
  11. Assist in the training and orientation of new staff members.
  12. Practice aseptic and sterile techniques to uphold infection control standards.
  13. Participate in mandatory safety, security, and infection control programs.
  14. Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations at all times.
  15. Engage in compliance training and adhere to the organization's Compliance Program.
  16. Demonstrate a commitment to professionalism, integrity, and respect for all individuals.
  17. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

SUPERVISORY ROLE

Oversee product representatives and observers within the Surgery Suite.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Previous experience in a surgical setting is preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS

Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Registered Nurse. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required. Certification for scrub technicians is preferred.

LANGUAGE AND MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to read, write, and follow both written and oral instructions. Strong communication skills are essential for interacting with patients and staff. Basic mathematical skills are necessary for performing essential job functions.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to make independent decisions when necessary and interpret various forms of instructions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires frequent standing, sitting, reaching, and occasional lifting of up to 75 pounds. Walking and climbing may also be necessary.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is representative of those encountered in a surgical setting. Attendance is crucial for a successful working atmosphere.
