This position is an "at will" apprentice training role or a Line Technician position within the Electrical department, responsible for aiding in the reconstruction, installation, and maintenance of electrical and fiber optic lines in the service area. Candidates may be hired as either Apprentice Line Technician or Line Technician based on their qualifications. The employee is expected to fulfill job requirements and training for each level within the apprentice line technician program. As the employee progresses, they will undertake more complex line work. This role operates under the close supervision of an assigned Foreperson or experienced line technician.
  • Assists technicians in the installation of overhead and underground primary and secondary wiring; digging trenches; installing switches or capacitor banks; and wiring underground switching cubicles and transformers.
  • Provides ground support for the installation of overhead and underground primary and secondary lines, residential and commercial services, and meters. More advanced apprentice levels may assist in transferring live electrical primaries from one pole to another while working on aerial buckets or climbing poles up to 100 ft. when bucket trucks are not accessible.
  • Provides ground support and assists in the installation of transformers, reclosers, capacitors, and other components on power poles. More advanced tasks involve single-phase transformers and constructing three-phase transformer banks.
  • Operates equipment according to skill level, including tractors, backhoes, rock cutters, boom and bucket trucks, and digs holes with line trucks.
  • Assists in the replacement and installation of power poles and anchors that have been damaged by weather or accidents.
  • Assists with the installation and wiring of underground transformers, switching cubicles, and termination cabinets.
  • Repairs and installs overhead and underground street lighting.
  • Monitors the work of ground support employees while tasks are in progress as assigned.
  • Assists in locating and repairing underground primary and secondary lines, including splicing.
  • Cleans and inspects power line repair equipment, including rubber safety gear and service truck bucket and boom equipment.
  • Completes job order forms, materials lists, fuel logs, personal timecards, and other necessary documentation.
  • Serves on call on a rotating basis, maintaining availability for emergency responses and overtime work.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Weight must not exceed 280 lbs. due to safety requirements of the equipment.
  • Completion of a formal apprentice line technician program with a minimum of four years of verifiable experience and successful completion of all sections of the comprehensive line technician test within the first 30 days of employment.
  • Must meet all job qualification standards set by APPA, OSHA, NESC, and the City of Marietta.
  • Possession of a valid Georgia Class A commercial driver's license and a satisfactory seven-year driving history, including no DUI's in the last 5 years.
  • Working knowledge of overhead line work, including transformers (three-phase and single-phase), reclosers, capacitor banks, and sectionalizers.
  • Working knowledge of underground line work, including termination of primary cables, three-phase and single-phase transformers, switching cubicles, fault locating, and repairs.
  • Knowledge and skill in using all tools, materials, and equipment utilized in electrical line work.
  • Understanding of safety methods and equipment used when working with live electrical lines.
  • Ability to work around high voltage lines without direct supervision.
  • Knowledge, skill, and ability in climbing poles and working at various heights.
  • Ability to apply basic math for job-related calculations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with subordinates, supervisors, and engineers to provide technical assistance, training, or suggestions to enhance job efficiency.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply all related code and specification manuals, including APPA and National Electric Safety Codes.
  • Ability to comprehend and respond to written job orders and accurately interpret blueprints.
  • Must possess a valid Georgia flagging certification, First Aid and CPR certification, or obtain within the work test period.
  • Ability to obtain ITS certification within the work test period.
