This position is an "at will" apprentice training role or a Line Worker position within the Electrical department, responsible for aiding in the reconstruction, installation, and maintenance of electrical and fiber optic lines within the service area. Candidates may be hired as either an Apprentice Line Worker or Line Worker based on their qualifications. The employee is expected to fulfill job requirements and training for each level within the apprentice line worker program, progressing to more complex line work as they advance. This role operates under the close supervision of an assigned Foreperson or experienced line worker.
  • Assists in the installation of overhead and underground primary and secondary wiring; digging trenches; installing switches or capacitor banks; and managing underground switching cubicles and transformers.
  • Provides ground support for the installation of overhead and underground primary and secondary lines, as well as residential and commercial services and meters. More advanced apprentice levels may assist in transferring live electrical primaries between poles while utilizing aerial buckets or climbing poles up to 100 ft.
  • Assists in the installation of transformers, reclosers, capacitors, and other components on power poles. More advanced tasks may involve working with single-phase transformers and constructing three-phase transformer banks.
  • Operates equipment as assigned according to skill level, including tractors, backhoes, rock cutters, boom and bucket trucks, and performs digging tasks with line trucks.
  • Assists in the replacement and installation of power poles and anchors that have been damaged.
  • Supports the installation and wiring of underground transformers, switching cubicles, and termination cabinets.
  • Repairs and installs overhead and underground street lighting systems.
  • Monitors the work of ground support employees during ongoing projects as assigned.
  • Assists in locating and repairing underground primary and secondary lines, including splicing tasks.
  • Maintains and inspects power line repair equipment, including safety gear and service truck apparatus.
  • Completes necessary documentation such as job order forms, material lists, fuel logs, and personal timecards.
  • Participates in on-call duties on a rotating basis, ensuring availability for emergency responses.
  • Performs additional related duties as required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Weight must not exceed 280 lbs. due to safety requirements.
  • Completion of a formal apprentice line worker program with a minimum of four years of verifiable experience, and successful completion of all sections of the comprehensive line worker test within the first 30 days of employment.
  • Must meet all job qualification standards set by relevant safety and electrical codes.
  • Possession of a valid Georgia Class A commercial driver's license with a satisfactory driving history.
  • Knowledge of overhead line work, including transformers and capacitor banks.
  • Familiarity with underground line work, including cable terminations and fault locating.
  • Proficient in using tools and equipment for electrical line work.
  • Understanding of safety methods when working with live electrical lines.
  • Ability to work around high voltage lines independently.
  • Skill in climbing poles and working at various heights.
  • Basic math skills for job-related calculations.
  • Effective communication skills for collaboration with supervisors and engineers.
  • Ability to read and apply relevant codes and specifications.
  • Capability to interpret job orders and blueprints accurately.
  • Certification in flagging, First Aid, and CPR, or willingness to obtain.
  • Ability to achieve ITS certification within the designated test period.
