If you are looking for a fulfilling role within a mission-driven organization, consider the position of Veterinarian at the ASPCA's Kitten Nursery.
The Kitten Nursery is dedicated to caring for numerous underage kittens and their mothers, providing a nurturing environment as well as support through an expanding foster initiative. This seasonal program operates during the feline breeding season, preparing healthy kittens for adoption through the ASPCA Adoption Center once they reach 8 weeks of age. Outside of this peak season, the Nursery Veterinarian contributes to various ASPCA programs in the city.
Key Responsibilities:
High-Quality Patient and Population Care (60%):
- Deliver exceptional, compassionate, and efficient veterinary care to kittens and cats, adhering to ASPCA guidelines and best practices in shelter medicine.
- Conduct thorough diagnoses and treatments, ensuring timely recognition of conditions requiring further care.
- Create a safe and nurturing environment for animals, staff, and clients through low-stress handling techniques.
- Maintain close communication with veterinary colleagues across ASPCA programs to coordinate patient care effectively.
- Ensure all animals receive medical examinations upon admission and ongoing care as needed, aligning with humane treatment protocols.
- Document findings and treatment plans accurately in medical records, ensuring timely scheduling and delivery of care.
- Oversee all aspects of veterinary care, including pre- and post-operative procedures, emergency care, and treatment protocols.
- Participate in daily rounds to assess patient needs and implement treatment recommendations promptly.
- Guide humane decisions regarding euthanasia, considering the physical and behavioral needs of the animals.
- Adhere to safety protocols and departmental procedures, ensuring compliance with all regulations.
Teaching and Mentoring (40%):
- Foster a culture of learning within the Kitten Nursery, promoting a respectful and collaborative environment.
- Model a commitment to continuous improvement in all aspects of care and handling of animals.
- Stay updated on shelter medicine principles and best practices, sharing knowledge with the team.
- Mentor and train animal care staff on shelter medicine protocols and provide guidance in patient care.
- Communicate medical conditions of shelter animals to relevant stakeholders, particularly during outbreaks of infectious diseases.
Qualifications:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited institution.
- Eligibility for licensure in New York State as a veterinarian is required; current licensure is preferred.
- Strong clinical skills and knowledge of shelter medicine principles.
- Ability to work efficiently in a high-volume environment while maintaining attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
