ROLE SUMMARY
The Behavioral Support Educator is responsible for instructing a classroom of up to 8 elementary-aged students who face significant social, emotional, behavioral, and learning challenges. This role involves developing and delivering lesson plans that align with the academic curriculum and adhere to the Common Core standards. You will manage classroom behavior systems and conduct educational assessments as required. Participation in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) is essential, including proposing goals and objectives tailored to each student's needs.

ABOUT OUR ORGANIZATION
The Village for Families & Children provides comprehensive behavioral health services for children aged 6-12 transitioning from psychiatric care. Our programs are designed to prepare these children for successful reintegration into community settings and family environments.
Students receive educational instruction on-site, complemented by intensive clinical support services, including nursing, therapy, and case management. Our professional team employs a trauma-informed, active engagement model to build meaningful relationships with youth, helping them enhance their overall functioning and develop the skills necessary for successful family transitions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan and deliver all required educational services for each student in the program.
- Maintain familiarity with each student's IEP and relevant educational documentation.
- Collaborate with external agencies to facilitate effective transition and discharge planning.
- Work closely with the Education Director, Clinician, and other staff to ensure continuity of care.
- Attend all necessary faculty and planning meetings.
- Provide direct instruction across all subject areas.
- Prepare all required academic documentation, including evaluation reports and progress assessments.
- Deliver culturally competent and trauma-informed educational services.
- Participate in regular program meetings and supervision sessions.
- Conduct educational assessments for new students and ongoing evaluations.
- Collaborate as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Implement effective behavior management strategies within the classroom.
- Perform additional duties related to the school's operations as assigned by the Education Director.
EDUCATION
- Master's degree in Special Education.
- Current certification in Special Education from the Connecticut State Department of Education is required; a Durational Shortage Area permit (DSAP) may be considered with relevant experience.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and coordinate with Child Development Specialists.
- Physical capability to perform essential job functions, including supervising children and executing physical interventions as necessary.
- Strong stress management skills and the ability to respond calmly in emergency situations.
- Comprehensive understanding of child development and the effects of emotional, behavioral, and learning disabilities on education.
- Cultural competence to effectively serve a diverse student population.
- Proficiency in using SMART BOARD technology for instruction and general computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and navigating computer-based IEPs.
