Job Summary

The Recreation Therapist is a vital member of the Rehabilitation Service team at the Dayton VA Medical Center. This role is responsible for providing primary treatment to Veterans and managing Recreation Therapy services at the Community Living Center (CLC) facilities on the Medical Center campus.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments and evaluations to identify patient needs and develop individualized treatment plans.
  • Implement and modify treatment plans as necessary to ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Provide direct patient care through recreation therapy interventions, including recommendations for assistive devices and techniques.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to facilitate the treatment process and ensure patient-centered care.
  • Document patient care, including assessments, progress notes, and treatment plans.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in therapeutic recreation or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or equivalent.
  • At least one year of experience in recreation therapy, preferably in a healthcare setting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Knowledge of recreation therapy principles and techniques, including assessment and treatment of functional deficits.
Working Conditions

This position requires regular and recurring physical exertion, including standing, bending, and lifting. Moderate to heavy lifting may be required to position patients and assist with ambulation.

The Recreation Therapist will work in a fast-paced environment, with a high level of patient contact and interaction. The ability to work effectively in a team setting and adapt to changing priorities is essential.
