TEACHER - MODERATE TO SEVERE DISABILITIES

POSITION SUMMARY

The role involves delivering tailored educational experiences and executing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with significant disabilities, ranging from ages 3 to 22. This position includes overseeing support services for students and supervising paraeducators, along with additional responsibilities as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities may vary by position, but typically include:

  1. Evaluating individual student needs and setting realistic, achievable goals.
  2. Designing and implementing personalized educational programs that align with IEP objectives, focusing on essential life skills, academic development, and social skills.
  3. Conducting ongoing assessments to monitor student progress.
  4. Maintaining an organized and conducive classroom environment.
  5. Overseeing the performance of paraeducators and providing guidance as necessary.
  6. Preparing comprehensive lesson plans and ensuring effective communication with paraeducators and substitutes.
  7. Participating in staff meetings and IEP discussions.
  8. Accompanying students on educational outings and community integration activities.
  9. Supervising students during recreational and meal times.
  10. Facilitating successful integration of students into mainstream settings when appropriate.
  11. Offering parents effective instructional strategies.
  12. Developing and implementing behavior management strategies.
  13. Assisting students with communication needs, which may include Braille, sign language, or other non-verbal communication methods.
  14. Performing specialized health care procedures as required.
  15. Driving students during field trips and community-based instruction.
  16. Completing other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California teaching credential. Experience in a classroom setting for students with severe disabilities is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Contemporary teaching methodologies for students with severe disabilities.
  • Understanding the general needs and behaviors of students with disabilities.
  • Positive behavior management techniques.
  • Interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with students, parents, and staff.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Safe practices in classroom and playground settings.

ABILITIES:
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Communicate ideas and instructions clearly in both oral and written forms.
  • Collaborate effectively across various agencies.
  • Assess individual needs and design tailored educational programs.
  • Evaluate student progress continuously.
  • Engage effectively with parents.
  • Maintain an organized and resourceful classroom environment.
  • Supervise and evaluate paraeducators and volunteers.
  • Perform specialized health care procedures as needed.
  • Establish positive relationships with students, parents, and staff.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to lift light objects (less than 20 lbs.) and occasionally heavier items (up to 30 lbs.). This role may involve frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of equipment, as well as various physical activities such as bending, squatting, and climbing stairs.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:
Valid California Driver's License
