Overview:
The Clinical Specimen Collection Specialist is accountable for executing all responsibilities associated with specimen collection, receiving, and referrals.
Key Responsibilities:

• Ensures the quality of work performed by team members, coordinating services to enhance customer satisfaction while maintaining cost-effectiveness.
• Complies with CAP, JCAHO, OSHA, infection control, safety, and other regulatory standards, including the privacy and security of health information (PHI).
• Maintains cleanliness and organization of collection trays, containers, bags, and work areas, restocking supplies as needed.
• Collaborates with the team lead to procure necessary supplies for the department.
• Executes all duties of a phlebotomist, including specimen collection, receiving, and sending out specimens.
• Prepares specimens for external laboratory referrals, which includes ordering additional tests, packaging specimens, arranging transportation, and completing referral documentation.
• Conducts all patient specimen collections, such as venipuncture, capillary collection, urine drug screening, skin tests, and cultures.
• Ensures that all specimen requirements are fulfilled at the time of collection to maintain specimen integrity.
• Demonstrates effective communication skills by engaging competently with customers, patients, family members, nurses, physicians, clients, and colleagues.
• Operates the laboratory information system to document specimen details, patient registration, order entry, collection lists, and other assigned responsibilities.
• Undertakes additional related duties as assigned, including standby/on-call, inventory management, special projects, and cross-training.
• Completes performance evaluations and annual competency assessments for associates in a timely manner.
Qualifications:
Education/Skills
• High School diploma or equivalent is required. Diploma or transcript must be provided at the time of hire.
• Completion of a Phlebotomy, Medical Laboratory, or Medical Assistant program that includes phlebotomy is preferred.
• Familiarity with medical terminology, data entry, and organizational skills is essential.
Experience
• A minimum of one year of phlebotomy experience is preferred.
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications
• Certification from a Nationally Accredited Program is preferred.
